Synchronized Swimming: Dancing Under Water

Excel V. Dyquiangco

They do flips, flops, twists and turns under the pressure of water at Rizal Memorial Stadium, and yet, not one of them is stressed out. This is because they are interested in the nature of the sport, called synchronize swimming.

synchronized swimmingEasy, it seems? Apparently not. These girls have worked hard for these graceful moments all year long. Calling themselves Synchro Swans, the girls practice almost daily.

Before hanging up their towels to enhance those twists and curls in the pool, the practice also consists of the girls lifting weights for at least an hour or so. Like any other sport, synchronize swimming requires flexibility and coordination of the muscles.

Holding your breath under water and lifting your legs up in the air for as long as a minute also involve stamina and endurance. So what kinds of exercise do they do in the gym?

According to their coach, going to the gym helps prepare the girls for whatever problems they encounter under water. They do treadmills and they just lift light weights. They also do sit-ups and push-ups, she said. The girls have a personal trainer to monitor them.

And does going to the gym help?

Yes, it does, said Ria, 24, the oldest of the girls. A little bit serious when answering questions, Ria is the mediator among the girls, especially when they get rowdy at times, since she is the oldest. It helps you with your posture, especially when youre under water because a good posture helps make every movement trim and proper. Going to the gym also builds up our confidence. It tones our body too.

With all of these things coming into play, its quite difficult to learn the different strokes they perform under water. And the training well! These girls do admit that until now, they are still having a hard time doing the routine under water, especially when they have to hold their legs in the air longer than usual. This routine, plus the training, takes years to practice.

Music in the background also helps in their routine any type of music will do but it is preferred that the music should have different beats, a combination of an upbeat sound and a slow sound. That way, the dance could excite, romance and enliven the audience in more than one emotions.

The girls admit that they had never hurt themselves doing the routine. They do bump into each other once in a while, while under water, but thats it. They never get scrapes and bruises. Its more of the endurance and stamina that they focus more of.

synchronized swimmingWhile just a few of these girls took up ballet and quite interestingly, one even was an ice skater when she was a tad younger and one was planning to take up ballet before, these dances didnt guarantee them of successful twists, movements and twirls under water.

In fact, they still had a difficult time incorporating these dances into their routine. According to them, the most challenging part of the whole sport is the flexibility, the endurance, the coordination of body parts and holding your breath for a period of time.

But for the most part, with the help of the coach, the girls manage to stay focused and to discipline themselves. They also want synchronize swimming to be exposed as a sport for the whole world to take part.

We want to be part of the SEA Games this December, Codette, 17, said. We want to be exposed internationally.

With fingers crossed, the Synchro Swans synchronized swimming team will be part of this SEA Games later this year, and to practice and practice.

  35. sol says:

Is Donn as in Donna Reyes, if it’s you let me know if you were able to enroll your daughter in synchro so I can send you the swimsuit that’s been used by my daughter’s in competition. Can your daughter swim in 13.5 ft. and she should be good in doing 20 laps before their practice. It takes a lot of patience and determination. My girls have 4 hrs./day practice 4x a week even winter time no excuse. It’s good to start early as they can figure it out at once. Hope she’ll be good in doing barracuda, porpoise and walk over.

Comment on the 2nd photo…don’t know if she’s doing a left ballet leg, toes should bend more. They should use a toe band in practice.
