The Philippines bagged 30 gold medals in the 2006 Asian Bench Press Championships held over the weekend at the Bayview Park Hotel ballroom.
Erlina Pecante, Leonora Catalina Oca and Renato Dio led the successful campaign of the 65-member RP contingent and were named best lifters in their respective divisions.
Pecante ruled the women’s 82.5kg. master 1 with a new Asian record of 110 kgs., Oca topped the women’s 52kg. master 2 division in 70 kgs. while Dio lifted 170 kgs. to win the men’s 82.5kg. master 2 category.
“It was a successful campaign because we were able to surpass our target of 20 gold medals. Our athletes trained so hard to win medals for the country,” said Powerlifting Association of the Philippines president Nick Cabalza, who was accompanied this morning by gold medalists Richie Rosales, Audrey Ortiz and Dio in the weekly Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum at the Pantalan Restaurant.
