Jins show wares in Petron tourney

Youthful taekwondo jins take the spotlight on Sunday with the staging of the 2006 Petron National Age Group Championships at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila.

Philippine Taekwondo Association (PTA) president Robert Aventajado expects around 1,000 athletes to vie for honors in four divisions: mid-junior (men and women aged 13 to 14) and grade school (boys and girls 12 years old and below).

Organizing committee chairman Sung Chon Hong says participants will come from all PTA-affiliated chapters and branches in Metro Manila and the provinces.

The event is expected to show the development and progress of taekwondo in the country, especially at the grassroots level.

“We expect to tap future national and international competitors from the big field of participants in (Sunday’s) tournament, says Hong. “They will try to outdo each other as they display the techniques they have learned from seasoned coaches in training.”

Far Eastern University (FEU) jump-kicked its bid for a first University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) taekwondo crown by sweeping its first two assignments yesterday at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) gym.

The Tamaraws started their charge by nipping Ateneo, 4-3, before pulling the rug from under defending champion UST in an equally tight duel, 4-3, in the men’s division.

The other men’s match in Season 69 taekwondo action saw University of the East (UE) trample on University of the Philippines (UP), 6-1.

UST, however, lived up to expectations in the women’s side as the defending titlist demolished Ateneo and FEU. The Tigresses outclassed Ateneo 7-0 for their first win before trouncing FEU, 6-1.

Champions of the national championships last month, FEU drew sterling performances from Romelle Roa, Jhundreb Allas, Jacob Barroga and Rene Ng Jr. in scoring the sweep.

UAAP LOGOTaekwondo competitions in Season 69 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) get going today with University of Santo Tomas (UST) hoping to again sweep all three divisions – men’s, women’s and juniors – even without its key players who are out of the country.

A number of UST’s key players are in Bangkok, Thailand for the World Cup of taekwondo, according to Tigers head coach Dindo Simpao.

UST’s biggest concern, Simpao said, would be Far Eastern University, which is coached by a former teammate in the national squad, Veronica Domingo.

The Petron national taekwondo team faces another big test in preparation for the Doha Asian Games when it competes in the 2006 World Cup Championships from September 14 to 18 in Bangkok, Thailand.

According to Philippine Taekwando Association (PTA) president Robert N. Aventajado, the Filipinos will be among the top 35 taekwondo countries selected by the World Taekwondo Federation to vie for honors in the prestigious tournament.

Among these, he says, are Korea, Chinese-Taipei, United States, China, France and Spain.

The Philippines is always considered as among the top contenders in the World Cup, with the Filipino jins snaring one silver and three bronze medals in the same tournament five years ago.
