How far can one go to break a record?

In 2004, Cebu City set the standard for the annual Milo Marathon when it registered 17,789 runners in the 3-km, 5-km and 21-km events. This was after Ricky Ballesteros, Cebu City Sports Center manager, took over as the local organizer of the growing footrace.

Last year, with Ballesteros still at the helm of the Milo elimination run in the city, the Queen City of the South shattered its own mark by drawing 19,320 runners.

On Sunday, Cebu aims to breach the 20,000-runner barrier with the staging of the 16th elimination race of the 30th National Milo Marathon.

Yep, the country’s premier 10-K foot race returns with a bigger bang on September 17 with the annual event expected to draw more than 2,000 participants, including the country’s top runners. This time, the exciting race will begin and end at its new venue in front of the IMAX Theater at the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City.

Defending champions Julius Sermona and Christabel Martes are expected to encounter stiff opposition from 2004 champions Eduardo Buenavista and Mercedita Manipol, who were both absent in the race last year. All four athletes are certified long-distance runners with Buenavista and Martes being the country’s top bets in the 42-K marathon events while Sermona and Manipol are RP’s leading 10-K runners.
