Don Juan Derby flags off October 15 at SLLP
The richest single race among the best 3-year-olds in the country today blasts off October 15 as the organizing Klub Don Juan de Manila (KDJM) released the official line-up of protagonists in the said P2-million race at the San Lazaro Leisure Park in Carmona, Cavite together with three other major races on that day.
The Philracom Don Juan Derby 2006 attracted a total of nine exciting and proven gallopers – five locals and four imported – vying for the top prize of P1.15 million.
The complete line-up of entries together with their respective jockeys include: Raymund Puyat’s Manila’s Gem (Jesse Guce); Engr. Edgardo Mailom’s Manhattan (Pati Dilema); Hermie Esguerra’s Don Exequiel (Jonathan Hernandez) and Hear Me (Fernando Raquel Jr.); David Lee’s Fairy Queen (Antonio Alcasid Jr.); Dominic Frederick Francisco’s Gundam (Dominador Borbe Jr.); Romy Hernandez’s Rebecca’s Magic (John Ralph Saulog); Francisco Cayco’s Big Deb (Lito Daquis); and Bienvenido Niles Jr.’s Leave No Doubt (John Alvin Guce).
The runner-up in this 2,000-meter race will receive P430,000 while the third and fourth placer get P230,000 and P90,000, respectively. All the other finishers from 5th to 9th will also receive a consolation prize of P20,000 each.
Don Exequiel, first leg winner of this year’s Triple Crown Championship Series, heads the list of local runners that also include Manhattan, Manila’s Gem, Gundam and Rebecca’s Magic. Meanwhile, the imported gallopers are composed of Fairy Queen, Hear Me, Big Deb and Leave No Doubt.
The annual event is now on its fifth edition and being organized by the Klub Don Juan de Manila and hosted yearly by the Manila Jockey Club, Inc.
The past champions include Free Wind in the inaugural in 2002. Midnight Lady followed in 2003 while Don Paolo was a runaway winner in the 2004. Wild Orchid is last year’s champion and is now campaigning in the Don Floirendo Golden Girls Stakes, a P500,000 event that is also part of the big celebration on October 15 together with the KDJM Juvenile Colts and Juvenile Fillies Championships.
The champion receives the top prize of P300,000 while the runner-up gets P112,500, third placer P62,500, and fourth placer P25,000.
Wild Orchid, now owned by Hermie Esguerra, faces five other imported challengers and a lone local runner in the 1,750-meter race. He will be partnered by regular rider Fernando Raquel, Jr. and will be saddled by former trainer Boji Fernandez.
The others include: Roland Lim’s Luxardo (Pati Dilema) and Floral Arch (John Cordero); Sonny Abella’s Ocean Deep (Antonio Alcasid Jr.); Mayor Eddie Dimacuha’s La Tienne (Eldie Salvador) and Ever Mine Now (Jonathan Hernandez); and Hermie Esguerra’s Suppressed.
Another P500,000 total prize will also be given to the top four placers in the KDJM Juvenile Colts and KDJM Juvenile Fillies Championships that will also be disputed that Sunday. Both major events will be disputed over the same distance of 1,400 meters. The officials runners include:

KDJM JUVENILE FILLIES CHAMPIONSHIP: Please Do (Cesar Domingo Jr.); Es Twenty Six (Pati Dilema); AP Tizzy (Dominador Borbe Jr.); Landed Visa (Fernando Raquel Jr.); No Fear (Jonathan Hernandez); Hillary (John Cordero); Lancia Stratos (Antonio Alcasid Jr.); Aunt Margaret (Jeff Ladiana); Condoleeza (Jesse Guce); Lady Commander (no rider yet); and Irene’s Fantasy (Louie Balboa).
These four major stakes events will be spiced up by 15 other Trophy Races that will have an added prize of P30,000 going to the winner of each race. Two Trophy Races will be disputed on Friday (Oct. 13), four will be held on Saturday (Oct. 14), while the nine other will spice up the four major stakes events on Sunday (Oct. 15).
